Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen (CCDOM) and the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) have partnered to repair and restore homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. More than a year after the Storm, thousands of families are still unable to inhabit their homes in New Jersey.
The partnership between CCDOM and MDS is making it possible for families to return to their homes and neighborhoods, in homes rebuilt by volunteers recruited by MDS.
“This partnership is consistent with the mission our organizations share: to help others in their time of need,” said Larry Stoner, Disaster Response Coordinator (East), MDS , and Marianne Majewski, Executive Director of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen.
The MDS volunteers are housed by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, which includes Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset and Warren counties. The Mennonites bring their own tools, equipment and food. CCDOM is providing all building supplies through a grant of funds from Catholic Charities USA.
“There are so many reasons we have loved working with the MDS volunteers: they are brilliant builders, they have a strong sense of mission and genuine humility. All we had to do was provide shelter and building supplies, they arrive with everything they need, including a cook!” said Ms. Majewski. “This partnership has meant that we can repair or restore damaged homes for a fraction of the cost. More families can be served and return to their homes in a shorter timeframe.”
“Everyone on the project brought different skills and resources, helping to restore homes for people who had nowhere to turn. Working with our MDS partners has been a wonderful experience. I have never seen a stronger work ethic,” said Artie Lucchesi, Construction and Facilities Manager, CCDOM.
