Pre-Conference News Release

Beginning with Baptism

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The 16th annual Bridgefolk conference will be held July 27-30, 2017, at the School of Theology and Ministry, Seattle University, Seattle, WA.

Bridgefolk is a grassroots ecumenical movement of Mennonites and Catholics who work together toward Christian unity by “proceeding through friendship.” Newcomers are always welcome at Bridgefolk gatherings.

2017 Annual Conference

The 2017 conference theme is “Pilgrimage toward Christian Unity: Beginning with Baptism.” Baptism is the beginning of our daily discipleship as followers in the way of Jesus and the source of our common identity as bearers of the name of Christ.

The 2017 conference will feature new and ongoing work toward the unity of the church.  One panel discussion will focus on the four-year trilateral dialogue on baptism between Catholics, Lutherans, and Mennonites. The trilateral dialogue, which concludes in 2017, has been conducted by the Mennonite World Conference, Lutheran World Federation, and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.  A second will focus on ecumenical formation theory and practice as developed at Seattle University’s School of Theology and Ministry.

The conference themes will be framed by keynote speaker Maxwell Johnson, Professor of Liturgical Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Johnson is a leading historian of early Christian worship and an expert on the development of Christian rites of initiation.

The conference will include a footwashing service and agape meal, as well as a hymn sing, which have become favorite elements of Bridgefolk gatherings.

Conference 2017 registration information is available at the Bridgefolk website: bridgefolk.net. Inquiries may be directed to: info@bridgefolk.net.
